Mayor Eric Haven recently shared to his Facebook group about the symbolism on the padlocks that are appearing and growing in numbers on the bridge in Depot Park.
He wrote Jonathan Smith, Clarkson City manager to see if he knew why they were there. He quickly wrote back the following.
"Very common on bridges in Europe, these are called Love Locks, where couples commit their eternal love for one another by placing the lock on the bridge and then throw the key into the water. I think it’s actually a very cool sentiment. In Europe it has become such a tradition that the weight of all the padlocks is causing a risk to some of the historic bridges, forcing maintenance crews to cut them off. I suppose that could be a problem for us too someday, but it’s just starting to catch on here."
You might just catch Mayor Haven adding his own lock to the bridge with his wife Nancy!
